Stage plate, polarization rotator, retardation plate, waveplate---call it by any name, some device that is can change the route or character of a light beam's polarization is a lot more convenient than spinning your laser on thems part. Then grab a slab of birefringent material and we'll figure from the way solid it needs to be.

Determining the thickness of some polarization rotator

1 Calcite is a birefringent materials. cristaux de calcite image by Ericos from internet site

Locate the refractive indices for your birefringent materials by the wavelength you'll be using. Birefringent materials have two indexes of refraction to soft polarized in orthogonal directions, and those indices alter as a function of wavelength. A materials catalog or online resource will give you the indices you need.

As an example, we'll operate calcite by some wavelength of 590 nanometers. The two indices with calcite are 1.658 plus 1.486.

2 Subtract the pair indices to find the measure of birefringence.

For our example, calcite, the difference remains 0.172.

3 Determine the way considerably polarization rotation you desire. Generally, waveplates are employed to introduce stage delays of either a fifty percent wave or a quarter wave. A quarter wave plate inserted in a beam adjusts linearly polarized light to elliptically polarized gentle, while any half wave plate rotates a linearly polarized beam to a different polarization perspective.

For our example, we'll go for a retardation of a quarter wave.

Calculate the thickness using the association

t = (lambda/delta) * wavefraction

where lambda yous the wavelength, delta is the measure of birefringence, plus the wavefraction remains the desired polarization hold off, measured inside fractions of some wave.

With our example, looking for a quarter-wave retardation in calcite at a wavelength of 590 nanometers, the thickness yous t = ((590*10^-9)/(0.172)) * (1/4) = 0.86 * 10^-6 meters, or less besides 1 micron!

5 Add numerous more thickness! Although this yous mathematically correct and this phaseplate would do exactly what we want it to do, it is so slender it would be extremely fragile, if it could even be manufactured. Consequently instead of calculating for a phase difference of a quarter wave, we'll calculate to a phase distinction of something as 10 1/4 waves. This gives us some thickness of around 35.2 microns, which is in least getting towards sensible. As long as you include the "extra" non-integer stage distinction you want, you may generate the waveplate thicker by way of this principle.

Tips & Warnings

Happily, for most applications we may buy a waveplate out of any established supplier---they've done the calculations plus the manufacturing for us. There are even composite versions that is provide moderately constant phase delays over wide wavelength ranges.
