When buying a Vintage Airstream travel trailer, check all the normal items involving water systems, both hot and cold taps, shower, bathroom flushing and sprayer. check out the waterpump for puddles around it, the water fill connector, everywhere there are water pipes along the bottom, (use a flashlight|be sure to have a light}.
Inspect all 110v as well as the 12v lights and outlets. Use a 110 volt plug in a meter or use a bulb in an outlet plug. Switch on and off all roof exhaust fans, the stove hood fan, the exterior spot lights and the light over the steps. When the trailer pig tail is hooked up to the tow vehicle, check the exterior and directional lights. Ask the owner to maneuver the trailer forward and back a couple of feet and hit the brakes (while you are standing close to the wheels so you'll hear the brake magnet click on and off). check the tires and insert a penny or a dime in between the tread and look to see if the date stamp on the coin is still readable. Penny depth is fine, dime depth is iffy and (means you will be buying tires soon).
Bring the tiniest screw driver you can find (any auto elements store sell them with a shirt clip on it) if you don't have one already. Then when you are down on your hands and knees inspecting for water from any waterlines, casually poke the subfloor with the screwdriver. If you discover a soft spot, that is a sign of further water damage. Favorite places for soft spots are around the entrance door, around the back edge of the trailer, under sinks and beneath areas with loose rivets. There are more tell talegiveaway signs, but these few ought to let you decide if you are still interested. Rotten wood only gets that rotted from being soaked by water. The repair may be simple if it's at the entry door rather than if it's beneath a cabinet or deeper inside the trailer under the shower faucets for example.
Notice if there is a DMV inspection sticker. that could facilitate support any claim that each one DMV criteria worked in the recent past.
Check the vintage Airstream for rivets that are loose or no longer filling their hole. inside loose rivets can have a black marking (from rubbing while loosening)there's a reason and you may be faced with } big repairs when you buy the Airstream.
If there are several loose rivets, then more often than not, there is considerably more flexing of the frame than typical. While standing in front of or at the rear of the vintage Airstream, look along all sides to ascertain if it's flat or if there is a bit of a wave. The usual place for the waving (or bumps) is behind the wheel wells. Whether it is a little wave or an evident one, the fix is straightforward.
If you like the airstream, then don't let the small repairs scare you off, as most of the repairs can be done by you as you go.
There are many ways to considerably cut repair costs. One way is to find a good welder and learn to use it. Also, one will need patience, persistence and not mind wearing grimy coveralls all day while laying beneath the airstream drilling out rivets or fixing pipes and floors.
Remember to run the jack up and down, have the owner show you the way the awning works and how to switch out the propane bottles. The propane bottles should have a current date on them. There are new rules currently and although some refilling stations may not follow them, they're going to get you sooner or later.
All of the flaws you discover may be translated into repair bills and should be reflected in any offer you make. Likewise, any special considerations you request should be reflected in the deal. Therefore, for instance, if you want delivery, you can negotiate the cost against some of the repair issues you found.
If you do not have vehicle to tow your vintage airstream, the convenience of having it delivered could get you time to shop for the perfect tow vehicle, rather than simply an honest choice. Just good enough, never is. Don't buy a vehicle simply to tow the trailer home. Shopping for the right tow vehicle is a completely different task and should not be rushed. The important part is that you find a vintage airstream that you can love and cherish for years and years to come!
