What you're attempting to do is adding the neighboring notices and alter the rhythm of the original melody range. Remember in jazz improvisation there's no one way to go about it. jazz education is an easy to use way for you to get started. Experiment with some other tunes on jazz CDs. Use your headsets to dictate what notes to work with. Soon enough there are other ways to be able to improvise.
