Mobile commerce is really exploding with the independent researchers forecasting its growth rate at whopping 30 per cent per annum since not only shopaholics but shoppers in general also find it convenient to pick up their android tablets, iPads, or iPhones to make purchases of as little as deals/coupons and as big as consumer electronics.

The meteoric growth is attributed to upswing in iPads usage in online shopping and popularity of other modern devices.


The mobile platforms are being used even for purchase of consumer electronics of popular brands of Samsung, Nokia, Toshiba, etc. as the retailers are partnering with the mobile optimized sites as well as launching easily navigable mobile apps.

True, currently accounting for negligible percentage points of ecommerce and brick and mortar businesses, mobile commerce has to go a long way to become a commonplace. However, Forrester predicts the revenue will reach $31 billion by 2016.

Forrester Research Mobile Commerce Forecast 2011 to 2016 included mobile media and content,all about the 3ds, retail, travel, coupons, and service and not ring tones and games.

The forecasts regarding mobile payments from eBay and PayPal must be pretty much encouraging for the investors and business to consumers (B2C) and business to business (B2B) ventures introducing apps to facilitate financial transactions via smartphones, android tablets, or iPads.

The online retailer predicts it would record eight billion dollars in mobile gross merchandise volume (GMV) in 2012 while its payment gateway, PayPal, would separately register seven billion dollars in payment transactions taking place in mobile environment.

Being the world leader in online payment transactions, the payment engine provides services in 25 currencies across 190 countries. On the other hands, San Jose-based eBay claims to be the world largest marketplace that recorded buying and selling of staggering $62 billion goods in 2010.

Daily deal sites offering digital coupons and promotional discounts/deals to their subscribers also extend services to the mobile users through mobile apps, which allow consumers to participate in group buying while on the go.

Internet auction sites and digital retail catalogues also provide customers with the mobile apps to browse and buy products via handheld devices/internet enabled handsets.

The positive response of consumers encourages retailers, white label service providers, daily deal sites and aggregators to build infrastructure that supports multiple mobile environments. The applications are specifically designed for android, iOS, etc.

Groupon clones like BuyWithMe, Eversave, Giltcity, etc. have developed or are in the process of developing mobile apps to enable customer grab mobile deals of cuisines, spas, beauty and fitness, etc.

Native mobile apps act as discounts detectors guided by GPS as they send alerts to the device when a user is nearing in-store specials. Users can also cast around products/bargains by inserting zip code in the given bar.

Mobile commerce will continue to grow with the usage of android tablets and iPads surging. According to NDP, 72.7 million tablet computers were sold in 2011, up gigantically 252 per cent over 2010. Of that, apple sold 38.1 million iPads. The company is expected to sell 116.4 million iPhones and 54.6 million iPads this year.
